Driftin' - Alessi

Although the Alessi brothers had only one significant hit in Europe with 'Oh Lori', they released several other singles and albums between 1977 and 1982. 'Driftin'' was released in 1978 as a single from their third album, also called 'Driftin''.

In the 2000s they resumed their touring and album recording career as a duo, with the release of two new albums as Alessi, and also as part of group Barnaby Bye.

London - Alessi

The Alessi Brothers made some great jazzy stuff in the late Seventies, with one of their best known tracks being 'Oh Lori'.

This single was taken from the same album as 'All for a reason', a year after 'Oh Lori'. It's an ode to one of the world's most exciting cities, 'London'. And it's got that same jazzy feel.

Found: Da Capo, Utrecht, May 28, 2010
Cost: 1 euro
Tracks: 'London' / 'Farewell'

All for a reason - Alessi

'All for a reason' sounds a bit like a telephone conversation set to music - although you can only hear one side of the conversation and the other one hanging up at some point. Besides this technical innovation, the rest of the song sounds a lot like other Alessi songs: in other words, laidback Seventies fare.

In the Netherlands, this was the Alessi brothers' second and last hit, peaking at number 22. The track was taken from the album of the same name, which reached number 27 in the albums chart.

My collection: 7" single no. 683
Found: All that music, Leiden, 1988
Cost: 2 guilders
Tracks: 'All for a reason' / 'Make it last'

Oh, Lori - Alessi

According to a text on the back of the sleeve of this single, 'the choice of 'Oh, Lori' for this single was made easy - from the beginning it has been one of the album's most-favoured cuts'. The single peaked at number 7 in the UK singles chart and number 6 in the Netherlands.

The jazzy 'Oh Lori' is uncharacteristic for my taste, although a few jazzy tracks appear in my singles collection. The Alessi brothers have a typical Seventies smoothness around them which charmed me for a while.

Found: All that music, Leiden, November 11, 1989
Cost: 3 guilders
Tracks: 'Oh Lori' / 'I was so sure'

Sad songs - Alessi

The twin brothers Billy and Bobby Alessi were born on July 12, 1954 on Long Island, New York. In 1977 they hit it big with the single 'Oh Lori'. 'Sad songs' was released that same year, but that single did not chart.

I'd completely missed out on the Alessi brothers and only found out about them at the end of the Eighties, when my sister bought a compilation cd of their music. Some of their songs really impressed me, so I bought the singles. I never had a craving for an entire cd of their music, though.

My collection: 7" single no. 2563
Found: November 19, 1995
Cost: 2 guilders
Tracks: 'Sad songs' / 'Don't hold back'
