Where did love go wrong - Belle and the Devotions

The response on this blog is sometimes very useful. Last year I found out that there are three singles by Belle and the Devotions: their Eurovision entry 'Love games' of course, 'Got to let you know', released in 1983, and this one: 'Where did love go wrong'.

It was of course just a matter of time until I would find this one. And as always, I found it in a place where I least expected it: in a second hand shop in Amsterdam. Like the other two singles, it sounds like a modern Motown track. And I guess that was the sound that the group was always going for. I have to say that in my opinion, this is the least interesting single of the three.

Love games - Belle and the Devotions

Belle and the Devotions represented the United Kingdom with the Motown pastiche 'Love games' during the 1984 Eurovision Song Contest. The 12" single featured on this blog some time ago, but obviously I've got the 7" single as well.

The song ended up on seventh place in the Eurovision Song Contest and peaked at number 11 in the UK singles chart.

My collection: 7" single no. 3174

Cost: 2 guilders
Tracks: 'Love games' / 'Rock me'

Got to let you know - Belle and the Devotions

Although Belle and the Devotions were a threesome when they represented the United Kingdom in the 1984 Eurovision Song Contest, the band started out as a name for British singer Kit Rolfe. Under this name she released the singles 'Where did love go wrong?' and 'Got to let you know' in 1983.

Both singles failed to chart, but the tide turned - albeit briefly - with 'Love games'. It would be their only hit single in a short career.

Love games - Belle and the Devotions

'Love Games' represented the UK at the 1984 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place in Luxembourg. The song was criticized by some for its blatant resemblance to certain Motown classics. It was a relative success, because it ended up seventh place in the Song Contest and number 11 in the UK charts.

I didn't know there was a 12" single of this track until I spotted it during a record fair. It is one of the few 12" extended versions of a Eurovision song. Even 1987's winner Johnny Logan managed to release a 12" single with just the three minute version of his winning song on it...

My collection: 12" single no. 470
Found: Record fair, Netherlands, 2003
Cost: 2 euro
Tracks: 'Love games [extended]' / 'Rock me'
