Disappointed - Electronic

After the release and promotion of their first album, Johnny Marr and Bernard Sumner recorded albums with The The and New Order respectively, regrouping with Neil Tennant in 1992 to record their fourth and highest-charting single 'Disappointed', which they had played live on a short tour of Europe the previous December.

The song was based on a piano riff by Marr's brother Ian and worked up into a full backing-track by Johnny Marr and Bernard Sumner. They decided to ask Neil Tennant to complete the song and he wrote the lyrics and vocal melody. Some of the words ('Disenchanted once more...') were partly inspired by Mylène Farmer's 1991 hit 'Désenchantée'. The single peaked at number 6 in the UK singles chart and remained Electronic's biggest chart success to date.

Forbidden city - Electronic

'Forbidden city' was the first single taken from Electronic's second album 'Raise the pressure'. It was written by Bernard Sumner, Johnny Marr and ex-Kraftwerk member Karl Bartos.

The song was not a huge hit, peaking at number 14 on the UK singles chart, but did receive substantial radio play in Britain. It remains one of Johnny Marr's favourite Electronic songs and opened up their best of compilation in 2006, with stills from its Tom Merriton-directed video used for the front cover and inside the booklet.

Found: HMV, London, July 4, 1996
Cost: 2 pounds
Tracks: 'Forbidden city' / 'Imitation of life'

Getting away with it - Electronic

Electronic debuted in 1989 with this single, 'Getting away with it', written by Bernard Sumner from New Order, Johnny Marr, ex-Smiths guitarist, and Pet Shop Boy Neil Tennant. The lyric is a parody of Marr's Smiths partner Morrissey and his public stereotyping as morose and masochistic. Vocals were performed by Sumner and Tennant on this track.

The sleeve of the single was designed by Peter Saville, who used an elegant stock photo of a glass of whisky. The single peaked at number 12 in the UK.

My collection: 7" single no. 2198
Found: Record fair, Rotterdam, October 8, 1994
Cost: 3 guilders
Tracks: 'Getting away with it' / 'Lucky bag (edit)'

Get the message - Electronic

'Get the message' was the first single taken from Electronic's self-titled debut album, but not their debut single: that was 'Getting away with it', released a year before. Electronic consisted of Bernard Sumner from New Order and ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr. During recording, Primal Scream backing singer Denise Johnson added a vocal at the end of the song. The single featured a non-album track as its B-side: 'Free Will', a sample-heavy dance track.

'Get the message' peaked at number 8 in the UK singles chart. I didn't know the song when I bought this single, however I did know a few of Electronic's singles and hoped that this one would be equally good. And it was.

Tracks: 'Get the message' / 'Free will'
