Zoals vrienden doen - Bonnie en José

'Zoals vrienden doen' was released as the follow up to Bonnie & José's 1984 single 'Cassandra'. It was a translation of the Abba track 'The way old friends do', featured on their 1980 album 'Super trouper'.

The Dutch duo had a minor hit with this single, peaking at number 36 in the Dutch Top 40 in the summer of 1985. The album 'Herinnering' ('Memory'), released almost at the same time, featured more Abba covers translated into Dutch.

Hey now, whatcha gonna do - José

Released in 1983, 'Hey now, whatcha gonna do' was another single by José that failed to chart in the Dutch Top 40. The song was written and produced by Pim Koopman and stayed faithful to the uptempo, major key popsongs that José was known for even when she was still a member of the girl trio Luv'. Still, the single failed to become a success.

I bought the single when it came out, and always wondered about the photograph on the sleeve: for a woman, the upper body looks decidedly, er, flat.

The good times - José

José had two solo hits under her belt (with 'I will follow him' and 'Secret love') when she released her fourth solo single 'The good times'. It was a new track, composed by Piet Souer, with a lot of the trademarks of the two previous singles: a bright production, an upbeat sound and a recognisable melody.

However, it was not a cover version and it seemed like José could only have a hit with cover versions: 'The good times' did not chart in the Dutch Top 40.

Cost: 5,5 guilders
Tracks: 'The good times' / 'Say no more'

Cassandra - Bonnie en Jose

Dutch singers José Hoebee and Bonnie St. Claire got together in 1984 to record a Dutch language cover of the Abba track 'Cassandra'. The two were friends and apparently thought it would be a good idea to do this. The lyric was translated by Benny Neyman, another Dutch singer. The single reached number 24 in the Dutch Top 40.

The single got a couple of sequels: the duo were involved in the project 'Abbacadabra', a TV musical for children based on songs of Abba, featuring more Dutch celebrities. In 1985 the duo recorded 'Herinnering' ('Memory'), a whole album of Abba covers.

I'm so sorry - José

'I'm so sorry' is the debut solo single from José Hoebee, one third of the girl trio Luv', that broke up earlier in 1981. Released in December 1981, this single was an unsuccessful start of a solo career that would be more successful the next year with the hit singles 'I will follow him' and 'Secret love'.

This copy of 'I'm so sorry' was made in Germany and features a different sleeve when compared to the Dutch release.

Secret love - José

'Secret love' was written in 1953 by the American songwriting duo of Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster. Its first performance was in the film 'Calamity Jane' by Doris Day. It received an Academy Award for Best Original Song. The song was released on record as well, reaching number 1 in the USA and the UK singles chart.

The song was covered in 1982 by ex-Luv' member José, who released it as her third solo single in September 1982. This upbeat, modern-sounding version reached number 11 in the Dutch Top 40.

I will follow him - José

After the Dutch girl group Luv' split up, all three members tried their hand at a solo career. José Hoebee was by far the most successful, as she racked up several Dutch Top 40 hits. This single, her second solo release, even managed to reach number 1, which is something the other two never managed to do.

'I will follow him' was originally written by Frank Pourcel and Paul Mauriat and recorded by Pourcel as an instrumental piece in 1961. The music was adapted by Arthur Altman and English lyrics were written by Norman Gimbel. This English version was recorded by Little Peggy March in 1963, who reachde number 1 in the US Billboard Hot 100 chart with it.
