Dancing in the city - Marshall Hain

Although the duo Julian Marshall and Kit Hain only released one album and two singles, I managed to collect quite a few discs by them - even if the titles are always similar. This is, I think, the last time I can feature them on this blog, for this version of 'Dancing in the city' is the last one that actually contains different content.

This single was produced for promotional purposes. The first thing that strikes you is the very different cover, and then on the disc there are not two, but three tracks: 'Dancing in the city', 'Real satisfaction' and 'Coming home'. The commercial single of 'Dancing in the city', released around the same time, has a different album track on the B-side. 'Coming home' was, of course, the second single from the duo, but the album version is found on this disc, not the slightly different single version.

Cost: 1,77 euro
Tracks: 'Dancing in the city' / 'Real satisfaction', 'Coming home'

Dancing in the city (Summer '92 remixes) - Marshall, Hain

'Who comes up with these things?' is a question I ask myself sometimes when I hear remixes of great old songs. Take for instance this 'Summer 92' take on Marshall & Hain's 'Dancing in the city'. Steve Proctor may have had a good time creating this (as evidenced on the title of the B-side: it's certainly self-indulgent but not a pleasure to listen to!) but the song suffers.

I must say that I am a fan of the British duo but these remixes don't really do them justice. One has to wonder what would have happened if they'd stayed together longer. Their music would certainly have been a joy to listen to with more eighties influences. As it stands, Kit Hain now lives in the USA and has become an author of novels, whereas Julian Marshall is a songwriter, composer, teacher, lecturer, mentor and musician.

Cost: 2 euro
Tracks: 'Dancing in the city (Summer '92 remix)' / 'Dancing in the city (Steve's self-indulgent trumpet mix)'

Dancing in the city - Marshall, Hain

Although I was only seven years old when this single was released, I can say that I've loved this song from the very beginning. I bought the single years later, but that was only because I had a double LP with this track on it since early 1979. And then there was this 12" single...

Every year in June there was a street market in a street near to my parents' house. The first time ever I went there I found this 12" single, featuring 'Dancing in the city', and pressed on blue vinyl. I was stunned. Even if it wouldn't contain an extended version, I simply had to have it. And so I bought it. It didn't even cost that much, although I'm sure it's pretty rare and hard to find now. But I might be wrong of course.

My collection: 12" single no. 9
Found: Braderie, Den Haag
Cost: 3 guilders or so
Tracks: 'Dancing in the city' / 'Take my number'

Dancing in the city 1987 - Marshall Hain

In 1987, Dutch DJ Ben Liebrand remixed Marshall Hain's 1978 hit 'Dancing in the city'. It wasn't just a straightforward remix, as singer Kit Hain contributed new vocals to the track, adding a new verse. Gerbrand Westveen played the saxophone on this new version.

The single was released in the summer of 1987, but failed to chart.

Found: Record fair, Utrecht, April 10, 2010
Cost: 0,5 euro
Tracks: 'Dancing in the city (Summer city '87)' / 'Dancing in the alley'

Dancing in the city - Marshall, Hain

'Dancing in the city' was the debut single of Marshall Hain, the duo formed by Julian Marshall and Kit Hain. The single peaked at number 3 in the UK and number 7 in the Netherlands. The single even made it to the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at number 43 in the winter of 1979. Meanwhile, the duo released one more single, 'Coming home' and an album, 'Free ride'. After these were unsuccessful, the duo called it quits.

Found: Disco Market, Den Haag, 1986

Coming home - Marshall Hain

Say Marshall Hain, and most people with some knowledge of the late seventies charts will reply with 'Dancing in the city'. A typical one hit wonder act, Julian Marshall and Kit Hain only released on album ('Free ride') before going their separate ways. Kit Hain tried to launch a solo career, but that didn't go so well either.

'Injustice!', I cry, for the follow-up to 'Dancing in the city' is a jewel. 'Coming home' was released in October 1978 and scraped the lower regions of the UK singles chart for a couple of weeks. The album 'Free ride' includes a version that is slightly different from the single version, because it omits the great fretless bass intro, replacing it with vocals from Julian Marshall instead.

So here it is, in all its glory, the single version of 'Coming home' and the B-side 'Different point'. Just to prove that I was right in buying this, even if I was just an eight year old kid.
