Send me a lover - Taylor Dayne

'Send me a lover' was written by Rick Hahn and George Thatcher, and released on September 6, 1993 as the second single from Taylor Dayne's album 'Soul dancing'. It peaked at number 50 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. In Europe, the single didn't become a hit. Perhaps that's why it didn't appear on 7" vinyl in Europe. This single was made in the USA and didn't come in a picture sleeve.

Unfortunately, the song was later covered by Celine Dion, who butchered the song beyond recognition with her grating voice. This version by Taylor Dayne remains the only one you can hear without bleeding ears.

Prove your love - Taylor Dayne

Taylor Dayne released 'Prove your love' as the follow-up to her debut hit single 'Tell it to my heart'. It was another high energy dance track with aggressive vocal delivery.

It peaked at number 7 in the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in the spring of 1988. It also reached number 8 in the UK singles chart. In the Dutch Top 40, it reached number 6.

Can't get enough of your love - Taylor Dayne

With a big voice and big hair, Taylor Dayne managed to stay on the good side of grating, but only just. The first single from her third album was a cover of an old Barry White classic, 'Can't get enough of your love' and ever since its release I have been iffy about this track. Still, I had the cd-single, I had the album so the 7" single was missing from my collection.

I was never sure that a 7" single actually existed so it was a good surprise to find one. And in such good condition too! If nothing else, the sleeve is a thing of beauty.

My collection: 7" single no. 5121
Found: Backtrack, Antwerpen, June 9, 2011
Cost: 1 euro
Tracks: 'Can't get enough of your love' / 'Let's spend the night together'

Tell it to my heart - Taylor Dayne

The Eighties were loud, proud and percussive, as demonstrated on this 12" single by Taylor Dayne. 'Tell it to my heart' was her breakthrough hit in 1987, and it pretty much defines how dance music sounded around that time.

Instrumental breaks, drum beats, vocals that almost tear through your bone, and all that in three versions that don't necessarily sound all that different from one another. Still, this is a fine dance track that stands the test of time pretty well.

My collection: 12" single no. 183
Found: Record Exchange, London, 1992
Cost: 1 pound
Tracks: 'Tell it to my heart (Club mix)' / 'Tell it to my heart (Percapella mix)', 'Tell it to my heart (Dub mix)'

Original sin - Taylor Dayne

'Original sin' was recorded as a theme song for the 1994 movie 'The shadow', based on the character of the same name created by Walter B. Gibson in 1931. At a budget of 40 million dollars, the movie barely made a profit with worldwide sales of 48 million.

Taylor Dayne performed 'Original sin', which was produced, written and arranged by Jim Steinman, the man responsible for many bombastic hits such as 'Total eclipse of the heart' by Bonnie Tyler and 'Paradise by the dashboard light' by Meatloaf. The single only made the UK singles chart, peaking at number 63.

I'll wait - Taylor Dayne

Even though the American double 12" single of 'I'll wait' contains no less than 7 remixes of the track, the 'US 7" mix' is not on it. That one is included on the B-side of this single, which I bought almost a year after I bought the 12" format.

By that time, I was merely completing my collection, not so much an avid Taylor Dayne fan anymore. That star had faded fast, unfortunately.

Love will lead you back - Taylor Dayne

Taylor Dayne was never one for subtlety, and so she delivers 'Love will lead you back' as one of her trademark powerballads: lots of loud vocals. The song, written by Diane Warren, is about a woman who is willing to set her lover free because she is confident that one day his love will lead him back to her: 'Sometimes it takes some time out on your own now / to find your way back home'. Warren has stated that she began writing the song while in a hotel in Russia, and that she had originally intended the song to be offered to Whitney Houston, but Arista Records president Clive Davis wanted to let Dayne record the song.

The single reached number 1 in the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and number 11 in Australia, but otherwise it wasn't a big success. In the UK, the single stalled at number 69.

I'll be your shelter - Taylor Dayne

'I'll be your shelter' was released as the second single from Taylor Dayne's 1989 album 'Can't fight fate'. Sounding more like a rock track than any of her previous singles, this was a bit of a departure from her dance-oriented repertoire. It didn't win over the audience: the single still only managed a number 43 placing in the UK, and did not chart in the Netherlands.

I thought it was a better single than 'With every beat of my heart', so I was really happy to buy this one.

With every beat of my heart - Taylor Dayne

'With every beat of my heart' was the first single from Taylor Dayne's second album 'Can't fight fate' (1989). The single wasn't a big success, as it peaked at number 53 in the UK and didn't chart in the Netherlands.

In the UK, the single was released as a limited edition with a posterbag and featuring Taylor Dayne's debut hit 'Tell it to my heart' on the B-side. It has to be said that the two pictures on the posterbag were quite sexy.

Tell it to my heart - Taylor Dayne

A number one hit in Austria, the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland, Taylor Dayne had a massively successful debut single with 'Tell it to my heart'. The single took off so unexpectedly in America, that she was forced to speed up the recording process for her debut album just to satisfy the record buying audience's appetite for more.

I didn't buy the single right away, because the follow-up 'Prove your love' came pretty quickly in the Dutch charts. I bought the single a few months after its release at a discount price.

My collection: 7" single no. 645

Don't rush me - Taylor Dayne

The fourth and last single from her debut album 'Tell it to my heart' was, amazingly, the most successful one in America, peaking at number 2. In the UK it stalled at number 76 and in the Netherlands the single didn't chart at all.

While I was collecting Taylor Dayne singles at the time, I waited a long time before I bought this one. I felt the song wasn't that interesting and the B-side was an album track as well, making it a less desirable item. In the end I found it very cheap, and added it to my collection to be complete. I never played this single much, though.

I'll always love you - Taylor Dayne

After scoring two big hits with the dance anthems 'Tell it to my heart' and 'Prove your love', Taylor Dayne tried her luck with a ballad. Titled 'I'll always love you', it showed a softer side of the American singer, something that was appreciated a lot in America (it peaked at number 3 in the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart), but not so much in Europe, where it stalled outside the top 40 in the Netherlands and only managed a lowly position at number 41 in the UK singles chart.

Personally, I thought this was one of Dayne's better tracks, and it was the first single of her which I bought.

I'll wait - Taylor Dayne

Taylor Dayne was born as Leslie Wunderman on March 7, 1962 in Baldwin, Nassau County, New York. Signed to Arista Records in 1987, she hit the worldwide charts with her debut single 'Tell it to my heart'. 'I'll wait' was the third single taken from her third album 'Soul dancing', released in 1993. In America, this double 12" single pack was released, featuring seven versions of the track. With remixes by Eric "E-Smoove" Miller and Steve "Silk" Hurley, this was a top three hit in the U.S. Dance chart.

I bought my copy in an obscure dance vinyl shop in the centre of Amsterdam, while I was studying there. The 'New Anthem mix', which goes on for almost 15 minutes, was the most impressive of them all.

My collection: 12" single no.
Found: Amsterdam, 2004
Cost: 25 guilders
Tracks: 'I'll wait (E-Smoove Anthem Vocal Mix)', 'I'll wait (E-Smoove Vocal Mix)' / 'I'll wait (7 Minutes of Silk)', 'I'll wait (4 Minutes of Soul)' // 'I'll wait (New Anthem Mix)' / 'I'll wait (Silky Dub Total)', 'I'll wait (Album Version)'
